Job Description

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a detail-oriented, highly organized individual to serve as Lieutenant to lead the Support Services Division-Office of Professional Standards. The division is essential to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and oversees the department’s ongoing accreditation, compliance, and support services. The Division Lieutenant participates in identifying policy and procedural deficiencies, develops action plans, and instructs officers and supervisors on the methods to follow.

The 2025 starting wage for the full-time position is $33.48 per hour, $69,638 annual.

Requirements

Maintaining State Accreditation through the Michigan Law Enforcement Association of Chiefs of Police (MLEAC). Create and maintain Sheriff’s Annual Report. Coordinate all in-service training and assign training curriculums within the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Maintain an internal database of all up-to-date employee training records. Reviews complaints and commendations from citizens while referring investigations of employee misconduct to the Detective Bureau (Internal Affairs). Ensure reports are readily available and are properly distributed to all appropriate department personnel, the court system, and other law enforcement agencies (where permitted by policy, copies of incident reports, accident reports). Conduct fingerprinting and firearm background checks. Complete SOR compliance. Complete departmental FOIA request. LESO Coordinator (Michigan 1033 Military Surplus Program). Completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting/ inventory (Secondary Road Patrol, COPS, 1033). Draft departmental policies and procedures; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence. Review and swear to warrants for all department criminal cases. Assists with writing and administering federal grants essential for law enforcement operations, ensuring appropriate spending and reporting procedures are followed. Draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on the funding requirements of the organization.

Education

Candidates must be currently licensed through MCOLES. High school graduate with an associate’s degree in criminology, criminal justice, police science, business administration, public administration, or a related field. Bachelors preferred.

Experience:

Five- Seven years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience in all major phases of police work. Preferably three years at the rank of Sergeant.

Job Description

Employees in this job serve as a shift supervisor and full-functioning Sergeants. The employee directs all law enforcement officers assigned to a shift, exercises extensive independent judgment in making difficult decisions that may include taking immediate actions with limited opportunity to consider various alternatives. The employee may be assigned duties of community services, assisting with grant writing and management, assisting with policy development and evaluation, and/or training.

The 2025 starting wage for the full-time position is $32.96 per hour, $66,550 annual.

Requirements

Establish and adjust schedules of deputies. Maintain record of time and attendance of deputies. Authorize overtime when necessary. Assign and monitor the daily duties of deputies. Handle and/or assign deputies to calls for service, follow-up, and other law enforcement services. Monitor the job performance of deputies. Apply corrective counseling and/or discipline. Participate in the department hiring process. Participate with the department field training program. Assist Professional Standards Lieutenant with directing and coordinating Road Patrol training. Coordinate training efforts with other divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. Operate all accessible public safety information systems. Road Patrol Deputy; Full & Part-Time

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for one full-time and multiple part- time Road Patrol Deputy positions.
The 2024 starting wage for the full-time position is $24.00 per hour, $49,920 annual. Top pay is received at year four of service. The 2024 four-year wage is $29.50 per hour, $61,360 annual. The 2024 starting wage for the part-time positions is $24.00 per hour. Part-time employees progress up the wage scale upon the completion of 2080 hours of work.

The Sheriff can request the Board of Commissioners to hire an employee at the two-year wage, based on prior education, training, and experience. The 2024 two-year wage is $26.30 per hour, $54,704 annual for full-time. An applicant being considered for employment will be required to pass an oral board interview, a criminal background check, a psychological examination, a physical examination, and a drug screen. If hired, an applicant must successfully complete a field training program.

JOB DESCRIPTION

As a member of the Sheriff's Road Patrol, a full or part-time Road Patrol Deputy performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order, prevents crime, deals with complaints, and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer. May serve civil papers. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices. A degree of independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the employee under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of danger.

REQUIREMENTS

The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills: The ability to quickly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures. Ability to gain a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and to attain efficiency in the methods and practices of criminal investigation expected. Ability to carry out instructions and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action, as well as an ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public. Good powers of observation, sound judgment, good moral character, combined with excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength and the ability to withstand stress required. Proficiency in the use of firearms. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and be capable of adapting to
potentially violent or unstable situations.

Job Summary
Authorizes requests for warrants as appropriate in accordance with legal standards and requirements. Negotiates pleas and sentencing recommendations with attorneys and defendants to resolve pending criminal cases. Researches and prepares misdemeanor criminal cases for court proceedings, and conducts court appearances. Assists in prosecuting felony, juvenile, and probate cases. Assists in Child Support cases as needed. Drafts motions, briefs and other legal documents. Assumes responsibility for office in absence of Prosecuting Attorney.

Skills

  • Advanced communication skills, in-depth knowledge of law as acquired through a completion of law degree from an accredited law school.

  • Must qualify as Chief Assistant Prosecutor through official appointment, completion of constitutional oath of office, and filing of bond ( if required) in accordance with State statutes.
